Los Angeles’ Michelin Restaurants

What is a Michelin star?

A Michelin Star is a prestigious award given to restaurants by the Michelin Guide, a French tire company that began publishing a guide to restaurants in 1900. The guide rates restaurants on a scale of one to three stars, with three stars being the highest rating.

History of Michelin Stars

The Michelin Guide was created by André Michelin and Édouard Michelin, two brothers who owned a tire company. The guide was originally intended to help motorists find good restaurants along their travels. The first Michelin Guide was published in 1900 and included 300 restaurants in France.

The Michelin Guide quickly became popular and soon expanded to other countries. Today, there are Michelin Guides in over 20 countries around the world.

Little-known Facts About Michelin Stars

  • The Michelin Guide is the most prestigious restaurant guide in the world.
  • To be awarded a Michelin star, a restaurant must consistently offer excellent food, service, and atmosphere.
  • Michelin inspectors are anonymous and dine at restaurants unannounced.
  • Michelin stars are awarded for the quality of the food, not the price of the menu.
  • The most Michelin stars awarded to any restaurant in the world is three stars.

Different Categories of Michelin Stars

The Michelin Guide awards restaurants with one, two, or three stars.

  • One star: A restaurant that offers excellent food in its category.

  • Two stars: A very good restaurant in its category, worth a detour.

  • Three stars: A truly exceptional restaurant that is worth a special journey.
